Thailand beats Lebanon to move into first place

BEIRUT, Lebanon -- Thailand moved into first place in its group in Asian qualifying for next year's World Cup, beating Lebanon 2-1 Thursday.

Lebanon (2-1) went ahead when Nirut Surasiang accidentally put the ball in his own net in the ninth minute.

Sakesan Pituratana tied it in the 15th minute for Thailand (3-0) and Kiatisuk Senamuang scored the go-ahead goal in the 38th.

The teams play again in Bangkok on May 30, the final day of games in Asia Group Five.

In Thursday's other game, Pakistan (0-2-1) and Sri Lanka (0-2-1) played to 3-3 tie.

The group winner joins Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Uzbekistan in the 10-nation Asian finals, which will produce two qualifiers for next year's tournament in Japan and South Korea.

Friday's schedule has Oman (4-0) at Syria (4-0) in Group One and Yemen (3-0-2) at United Arab Emirates (3-2) in Group Eight.

On Saturday, it's Philippines (0-4) at Laos (0-4) in Group One. On Sunday, Brunei (0-5) is at India (2-1-2) in Group Eight and Cambodia (0-4-1) is at China (4-0) in Group Nine.
