Thailand leads World Cup group after 3-0 win over Sri Lanka

BANGKOK, Thailand -- Thailand beat Sri Lanka 3-0 Saturday to remain in first place in its World Cup qualifying group in Asia.

Kiatisak Senamuang scored two goals for the Thais in the Group 5 game in Bangkok.

In other Asian qualifying, Lebanon routed Pakistan 8-1 in Bangkok in Group 5, and the Philippines tied Laos 1-1 in Manila in Group 1.

Thailand leads its group with 12 points after four games. Lebanon is second with nine points, followed by Sri Lanka and Pakistan, each with one point.

The Philippines finished last in its group with one point while Laos was third with four. Oman won the group with 16 points to advance to the next round and Syria was second.

The top team in each of the 10 Asian groups advances to the final qualifying round. Two or three teams from Asia will qualify for the 2002 World Cup. South Korea and Japan qualify as hosts.

On Monday, it's Sri Lanka vs. Lebanon and Thailand vs. Pakistan. On Wednesday, Sri Lanka faces Pakistan while Thailand and Lebanon most likely will play for the group. All games are scheduled for Bangkok.
