the league's leading scorer, on Friday was named MLS Player of
the Month for May.

Mathis, who also received the honor in June 2000, collected 12
points in six matches during May, tallying five goals and two
assists.
"This is a great honor but something that actually belongs as
much to my teammates as it would to me because they are the ones
that make everything happen and I just benefit from it," Mathis
said."
Mathis' goal production included the first hat trick in the
league this season in the MetroStars' 4-1 rout of the defending
MLS Cup champion Kansas City Wizards on May 2. The 24-year-old
tallied from a curling 27-yard free kick with his right foot, a
25-yard blast with his left foot and an 8-yard effort with his
head.
Mathis' goal-explosion against the Wizards seemed all the more
remarkable because it came against goalkeeper Tony Meola, who
had registered two straight shutouts prior to the match.
Just four days later, Mathis had a goal and an assist, sparking
the MetroStars' three-goal rally in the final 11 minutes of a
3-2 victory over D.C. United.
The Georgia native closed out the month by netting the opening
goal in the MetroStars' 2-0 blanking of European champion Bayern
Munich in an exhibition match on May 26 at Giants Stadium.
In nine games this season, Mathis has tallied seven goals and
four assists for 18 points.
