NEW YORK -- Forward Dante Washington of the Columbus
Crew, who had a franchise record eight points in a match, earned
MLS player of the week honors for the period ending Sunday.
Washington, who made just his fourth start of the season, scored
a hat trick and added two assists to lead the Crew to a 6-1
victory over the Tampa Bay Mutiny.
Washington broke the Crew record of seven points in a game set
by Stern John in April 1998. Washington became the ninth player
in league history to record at least eight points in a match.
The MLS record of 10 points is held by Clint Mathis.
Washington is the first Crew player to win the award this
season. He also garnered the award twice in 2000 when he led
the Crew in scoring with 39 points (15 goals, 9 assists).
