NEW YORK -- Goalkeeper Adin Brown, who made 10 saves to help the Tampa Bay Mutiny snap their six-game losing streak, was named MLS Player of the Week for the period ending Sunday, Aug. 5. Brown recorded Tampa Bay's first shutout since July 22, 2000 in a 2-0 home triumph over Western Division-leading San Jose on Saturday. The 6-5 goalkeeper, who collected the award for the first time, saved a 62nd-minute penalty kick from forward Dwayne DeRosario to frustrate the Earthquakes, who out-shot the Mutiny 20-7. "At a time when the team needed a great performance, Adin really stepped up," Mutiny coach Perry Van Der Beck said. "His game was one of the best goalkeeping performances I've ever seen in MLS. He's very deserving of the award. That was stuff highlight reels are made of." The victory was the first of Van Der Beck's brief reign and the Mutiny's first win since June 28, when MLS all-time assists leader Carlos Valderrama and former Mutiny goalkeeper Scott Garlick were sent to the Colorado Rapids in a blockbuster deal that brought Brown to Raymond James Stadium. Brown, 23, is touted as a future United States national team goalkeeper. He recorded three shutouts and a 1.00 goals-against average in eight matches for the U.S. Under-23 national team in 1999, but missed the 2000 Olympics at Sydney due to various injuries. In the voting for the weekly honor, Brown edged Columbus Crew forward Jeff Cunningham.
