SYDNEY, Australia -- Terrorist attacks in the United States shadowed Saturday's commemoration marking the first anniversary of the start of the Sydney Olympics.

A minute's silence was observed at Olympic Park before the cauldron was relighted in tribute to the opening ceremony a year ago.

"The Olympic spirit kindled here just a year ago was never more needed than now," New South Wales state Premier Bob Carr said before lighting the cauldron.

"On this anniversary of universal hospitality and international goodwill, we need to be reminded how little is gained by murder and grief and the fury of endless revenge."

Organizers continued with the celebrations despite the terrorism in New York and Washington. The cauldron has been refurbished and is in a new park adjacent to Olympic Boulevard. It will burn until the celebrations end Sept. 30.
