TEL AVIV, Israel -- Andreas Herzog scored in the 90th minute Saturday night to give Austria a 1-1 tie against Israel and a spot in the European playoffs of World Cup qualifying.

Israel, which would have advanced on goal difference with a victory, had gone ahead on Shimon Gershon's penalty kick in the 55th minute.

Austria will play Turkey in a home-and-home, total-goals playoff next month for a berth in next year's World Cup in Japan and South Korea.

Spain (6-0-2) finished first in Group Seven with 20 points and got the automatic berth. Austria (4-1-3) was second with 15 points, three ahead of Israel (3-2-3).

Austria was missing 14 players from its regular roster after concerns over safety and injuries. The game originally was scheduled for Oct. 7 but FIFA, soccer's governing body, postponed it after a plane flying out of Tel Aviv crashed in the Black Sea three days earlier after it was hit by an errant Ukrainian missile.
