HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- The New York Jets rewarded coach Herman Edwards for the team's first playoff berth in three seasons, giving him a one-year contract extension Monday. Edwards, who led the Jets to a 10-6 record in his first season as head coach, is now signed through the 2005 season. Financial terms of the deal, which was first reported by SportsLine.com's Jay Glazer last week, were not released. The Jets were knocked out of the playoffs by Oakland in a wild-card game. New York won at Oakland the week before to qualify for the postseason. New York also released punter/quarterback Tom Tupa, wide receiver Matthew Hatchette, and safety Chris Hayes on Monday to clear $1.5 million from the salary cap. Tupa, a 13-year veteran, spent the last three seasons with the Jets, primarily serving as the punter. He completed his only pass attempt last season for nine yards. Hatchette, a fifth-year player, caught only two passes for 44 yards with New York last season -- his first with the Jets after four with Minnesota. Hayes has been in the NFL for six seasons, the last five with New York. AP NEWS The Associated Press News Service Copyright 2002, The Associated Press, All Rights Reserved Broadway Joe NFL.com |
