GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. -- Two-time NHL All-Star Milan Hejduk of the Colorado Avalanche was cited for driving 102 mph in a 65 mph zone but may not face jail time under a possible plea deal. Hejduk, 26, was pulled over by a Garfield County sheriff's deputy on Feb. 2. The forward was returning from Aspen to his home in Highlands Ranch just south of Denver. Hejduk's lawyer, Thomas Mulvahill, would not comment Wednesday. A court filing said Mulvahill and prosecutors have discussed having Hejduk plead guilty to speeding in exchange for having a charge of reckless driving dropped. Prosecutors would recommend no jail time if the deal goes through, the court filing said. Then-Deputy Matt Gronbeck said he did not realize who he had pulled over. "I had no idea who he was until I asked him what his occupation was," said Gronbeck, who now works for the Glenwood Springs police. "He said, `I work for the Colorado Avalanche, I'm a hockey player."' Hejduk's mother was in the back seat of the sport-utility vehicle and another woman was in the front passenger seat, Gronbeck said. Hejduk was cited in May 2001 for driving 70 mph in a 45 mph zone in the Denver suburb of Englewood. He pleaded guilty in September to careless driving. The Avalanche played the San Jose Sharks in Denver on Wednesday and Thursday in the second round of the NHL playoffs. Hejduk planned to participate in a hearing in Glenwood Springs on Thursday by telephone, said Garfield County courts clerk James Bradford.
