Davenport, Martin win titles in Sydney

SportsLine wire reports

SYDNEY -- Lindsay Davenport and Todd Martin will have momentum going into the Australian Open.

The Americans won titles Saturday at the Adidas International in Sydney, a warmup for next week's first Grand Slam tournament of the year.

DAVENPORT, WHO TOOK the No. 1 ranking from Martina Hingis last October, beat the Swiss star 6-4, 6-3 in the women's Adidas final.

"I love playing Martina. It's always an enjoyable match and hopefully we'll be playing again two weeks from today," Davenport said of a possible matchup in the Australian Open final.

Davenport beat Hingis in the U.S. Open final in September, but had lost the last two matches between the world's top two players. Davenport has won four of their seven title matches in the last 14 months.

"It's been a really exciting time for me," Davenport said. "I'm sometimes overwhelmed by it all."

Earlier in the day, Todd Martin beat Spain's Alex Corretja 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) to win the men's final.

MARTIN, WHO ALSO WON the tournament in 1996, said he's confident going into the Australian Open.

"I'm thrilled with the way things have gone this week," he said. "I feel this is the best that I've hit the ball in a long time."

After winning the first set against Hingis, Davenport got a service break in the fifth game of the second set and then closed out the match with another break.

Davenport, who lost to Hingis in the final of the season-ending Chase Championships and again in last week's Hopman Cup team tournament, evened her career record against Hingis at 7-7.
