CARVERSVILLE, Pa. -- Bernard E. "Barney" Berlinger, a record-setting collegiate decathlon champion who earned the prestigious Sullivan Award as the nation's best all-around athlete, has died of heart failure. He was 94.

Berlinger died Monday at his home.

A member of the 1928 U.S. Olympic team, Berlinger set numerous track records while at the University of Pennsylvania. He was a three-time winner of the college decathlon at the Penn Relays, where he set records each year from 1929-1931.

He won the James E. Sullivan Memorial Trophy in 1931 and was voted the nation's best amateur athlete by the National Sportswriters Association.

He is survived by his wife, Marguerite Wagner Berlinger; a son, Barney Berlinger Jr.; a daughter, Linda Burke; and seven grandchildren.
