PHILADELPHIA -- Brian Mitchell of the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday moved past Walter Payton and into second place on the career list for combined yardage.

Mitchell went past Payton's mark of 21,803 with a 5-yard punt return in the second quarter of Philadelphia's game against Washington.

He finished the game with 35 yards on punt returns and 82 on kickoffs and now has 21,902 for his career. Jerry Rice of Oakland is the career leader with 22,202 after catching three passes for 30 yards in the Raiders' loss to Miami on Sunday.

The mark includes punt and kickoff returns and yards rushing and receiving.

The 34-year-old Mitchell is in his 13th season and has been primarily a kick and punt returner and third-down back. He played 10 years for Washington before signing with the Eagles in 2000.
