For a low-profile and historically difficult job, the Columbia coaching vacancy has certainly attracted some famous names. Both former NBA great Kareem Abdul Jabbar and Duke star Bobby Hurley have interviewed for the job with administrators at the Ivy League school, according to sources. Neither has any college coaching experience and are not considered favorites for the position. Jabbar is a Hall of Fame player who is the NBA's all-time leading scorer. He has been looking for a college coaching position for two years. Hurley, a former star at Duke, is the son of Bob Hurley, Sr., the legendary coach at Jersey City (N.J.) St. Anthony's. The more likely candidates include Tony Chiles, a Columbia alum and New York native who is an assistant at Iona and a connected recruiter up and down the East Coast. Northwestern assistant Paul Lee, also a Columbia alum, and Villanova assistant Joe Jones, whose brother James is the head coach at Yale. Columbia went winless in the Ivy League this season under Armond Hill. |
