South Region Second Round

SACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) -- Fifth-seeded Indiana tries to reach the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1994 when it matches up with 13th-seeded North Carolina-Wilmington at Arco Arena on Saturday in a second-round South Region encounter.

Indiana (21-11) dispatched 12th-seeded Utah with ease on Thursday, 75-56. It was the Hoosiers' first NCAA Tournament victory under Mike Davis, whose team was upset by No. 13 seed Kent State in the first round last year, his first as coach after replacing Bobby Knight.

Tom Coverdale scored 19 points and Jeff Newton 15 for the Hoosiers, who led at halftime, 42-27, and held at least a 12-point advantage thereafter.

The Hoosiers have been in the past 17 NCAA Tournaments, but they have not won two games in any since 1994, when they were upset by Boston College, 77-68, in the Sweet 16. They had been 2-7 in the Tournament since then before the victory over the Utes on Thursday.

Indiana is now 53-25 all time in the Tournament.

North Carolina-Wilmington (23-9) won its first-ever NCAA Tournament game on Thursday with a thrilling, 93-89 overtime triumph over No. 4 seed Southern California.

The Seahawks blew a 19-point second-half lead but outscored the Trojans in the extra session, 13-9. Brent Blizzard had 18 points in the win, UNCW's fifth in a row.

UNCW, the Colonial Athletic Association regular-reason and tournament champion, is 1-1 all time in the Tournament. The Seahawks lost to Cincinnati in the first round in 2000.

The teams have only met once before, at Bloomington on December 12, 1986, when the Hoosiers escaped with a 73-72 win.
