HONOLULU -- Two weeks ago, Fresno State was the darling of college football. Two losses later, the Bulldogs have fallen out of favor. Nick Rolovich's 14-yard touchdown pass to Ashley Lelie with 13 seconds left led Hawaii to a stunning 38-34 victory over No. 18 Fresno State on Friday night. The loss was the second straight for the Bulldogs (6-2, 2-2 Western Athletic Conference), whose hopes for a bowl bid are in jeopardy.
"We gave that game away tonight," Fresno State coach Pat Hill said. "Give a lot of credit to Hawaii, but we made too many mistakes to win a football game like that." The Bulldogs were attempting to bounce back from its 35-30 loss to Boise State last week. That setback knocked Fresno State out of Bowl Championship Series contention. "I am not happy with our football team right now," Hill said. "There is no way this football team should lose this game tonight. "I guarantee you something: We're going to win the next five games. That's all I'm going to say. "So you write it any way you want to. You can describe it any way you want to, but there's going to be some changes, and we're going to get it done." Hawaii pulled off the upset despite a late injury to Rolovich, who dislocated his left shoulder. "I asked Nick to tell me the truth, 'Can you go back in the game?"' Hawaii coach June Jones said. "And he said, 'It's my left shoulder, coach. I throw with my right.'" With his dislocated shoulder popped back into place, Rolovich found Lelie for a touchdown to cap the upset. "I just had to make it a catchable ball with that kind of receiver out there," Rolovich said. "It's unbelievable what he can do." With the win, the Warriors (5-2, 4-2 Western Athletic Conference) positioned themselves for a possible bowl berth. "There was a bunch of times when they could have quit," Jones said. "I've been on a lot of teams that would have. They hung in there and kept battling and that says a lot about their heart." It was a wild finish as Hawaii scored 22 points in the final quarter, helped by a pair of critical fumbles by Fresno State quarterback David Carr. With the Bulldogs (6-2, 2-2 WAC) leading 27-24 in the fourth quarter, Carr fumbled the snap and Nate Jackson recovered at the Hawaii 4. The Warriors went 96 yards, scoring on an 11-yard pass from Rolovich to Lelie. Jackson, who was questionable for the game following a motorcycle accident earlier in the week, was also responsible for the game-winning score. He hit Carr from the blindside and Laanui Correa recovered at the Fresno State 34 with 3:09 left. Seven plays later, Rolovich hooked up with Lelie for the winning touchdown. In between the Hawaii scores, Fresno State took the lead with Carr hooking up with Rodney Wright on a 35-yard pass with 4:55 left. The Bulldogs built leads of 17-6 in the first half and 27-13 in the third quarter, but could not hold them. Rolovich, who has led Hawaii to four straight victories following a hand injury to starter Timmy Chang, completed 29 passes for 348 yards and three touchdowns -- including a 19-yarder to Channon Harris at the beginning of the fourth quarter. The Warriors' other touchdown came on a 3-yard pass in the second quarter from Chad Kapanui to Lelie, who finished with nine catches for 122 yards. Lelie entered as the nation's second-best receiver with 7.67 receptions a game and sixth in yards with 116.5 yards per game. Justin Ayat added field goals of 35, 23 and 32 yards for the Warriors. Chad Owens' 65-yard kickoff return set up one of the field goals, and the second was keyed by a 64-yard interception return by Correa. Carr was 28-of-45 for 400 yards, including scoring passes of 8 and 27 yards to Charles Smith, 10 yards to David Shabaglian and the 35-yard pass to Wright. Asen Asparuhov added a 35-yard field goal for Fresno State.
