TEMPE, Ariz. -- The Washington Huskies cut it a little closer than usual in their latest comeback victory. John Anderson kicked a 30-yard field goal as time expired to give the No. 13 Huskies a 33-31 victory over Arizona State on Saturday night. Willie Hurst ran for 185 yards for Washington (6-1, 4-1 Pac-10), which has made five successful fourth-quarter comebacks this season to match its 2000 total.
"Needless to say, we are elated with the dramatic -- once again -- victory," Washington coach Rick Neuheisel said. "We've got a lot of grit on this team. I'm very pleased about the way our kids fight and scratch." The Huskies trailed 31-30 when they started the winning drive from their own 10 with 7:12 left. Anderson lined up for a 28-yard attempt with 51 seconds left on fourth down, but Arizona State jumped offsides, giving Washington a first down. Washington worked the clock down to 3 seconds before Anderson lined up for the winning kick. Anderson almost didn't kick Saturday because of a hip injury. "I pulled my hip flexor Thursday," Anderson said. "I could not even kick before we got on the plane to come here. Coach was deciding who he was going to use, and I wanted to kick it so bad and he let me do it." Cody Pickett passed for 252 yards and two touchdowns for the Huskies. "When it comes to the end of the game, you just have to keep going," Pickett said. "At the end of the game, we just tried to go straight ahead." Jeff Krohn threw for 320 yards and two touchdown passes for Arizona State (1-3, 4-3). "To be a great team, you have to win the fourth quarter," Krohn said. "We didn't do that and they did. We took advantage of some things in the second half, but we still didn't put the ball in the end zone as much as we should." Washington opened the scoring on its second possession. The Huskies drove 54 yards in seven plays -- all passes -- with the final three coming on Pickett's pass to Todd Elstrom. The Huskies made it 14-0 2:51 into the second quarter. Reggie Williams capped a six-play, 71-yard drive with an 11-yard touchdown pass from Pickett. On the first play of the next series, Krohn mishandled the snap and Washington recovered the fumble at the Arizona State 19. Four plays later, Anderson kicked a 31-yard field to make it 17-0. "We have to quit beating ourselves and go out and play," Arizona State coach Dirk Koetter said. "Tonight, we were a little short. "You've got to give them credit. They are a good football team and they're well coached. We're going to be like that someday, too." Arizona State got on the scoreboard at 7:37 of the second quarter when Krohn hit Mike Pinkard with a 23-yard touchdown pass. Anthony Kelley's interception set up the Huskies' next score, which came on a 2-yard run by Pickett. The Sun Devils got a 42-yard field goal from Mike Barth with 7 seconds left in the second quarter and Washington led 24-10 at halftime. Tom Pace ran 3 yards for an Arizona State touchdown 4:39 into the third quarter to make it 24-17. On the Huskies' next possession, Donnie O'Neal blocked a punt and punter Derek McLaughlin kicked the free ball out of the end zone for a safety. Arizona State then took the free kick and went 50 yards in six plays, with Krohn connecting with Shaun McDonald on a 33-yard pass that gave Arizona State its first lead at 25-24. Washington came back with Willie Hurst's 3-yard touchdown run on the last play of the third quarter to go back up 30-25. Arizona State regained the lead 31-30 on a 1-yard Delvon Flowers touchdown run with 12:59 left.
