Hollandsworth turns into Popeye
After Todd Hollandsworth struck out in his first two-bats Sunday, nobody at Coors Field could have predicted what he would do later in the game. Nobody, maybe, except for Colorado's Hollandsworth. "I punched out my first two ABs," he said. "I didn't feel bad in there. I even told (Greg) Norton in the outfield, I felt close. I just needed to find the middle and I was able to do it." Yes, he was. In his next three at-bats, Hollandsworth belted three home runs, including a three-run walk-off blast in the bottom of the 10th inning off Arizona closer Matt Mantei, to lift the Rockies to a dramatic 10-7 victory. The Rockies, who took two of three from the Diamondbacks, open a three-game series at San Diego on Tuesday. At 6-6, they're just a game out of first in the tightly-packed AL West. The Padre are also 6-6. MORE HOLLANDSWORTH: It was the first three-homer game for the Rockies' outfielder, who also had a pair of two-run shots and drove in a career-high seven runs. His second homer gave Colorado a 7-5 lead in the bottom of the eighth. "It's fun to have the opportunity to be in that situation," said Hollandsworth, who has three two-homer games. "That's what being a major league baseball player is all about." Hollandsworth had been 0-for-3 lifetime against Mantei with three strikeouts, which is why Arizona manager Bob Brenly opted not to intentionally walk him with a base open. "I thought he'd (Mantei) be able to overpower him with high fastballs," Brenly said. "Obviously, it didn't work out that way." It was Hollandsworth's first three homers of the season and the 3-for-5 day raised his average to .324. QUOTEWORTHY: "You never expect three homers in a game, but I wasn't shocked. The guy's incredible. I call him Hercules. I have played with a lot of players and been around a lot guys as a coach and he hits the ball as hard as anyone that I've ever seen pick up a piece of wood." -- hitting coach Clint Hurdle on Hollandsworth. QUOTEWORTHY II: "The guy's not that big, but look at his forearms. He's Popeye." -- Colorado pitcher Ron Villone on Hollandsworth. WALKER SPRAINS ANKLE: Outfielder Larry Walker was off to a great start, but the injury-prone outfielder sprained his ankle sometime during Friday's 7-3 loss against the Diamondbacks. Walker homered off of Randy Johnson that night. It was his sixth homer. He's hitting .425 with 16 RBI. Walker pinch-hit Sunday and could be back in the starting lineup by Tuesday. With Walker out, Bell used Juan Pierre in center with Todd Hollandsworth in right and Ron Gant in left. |
