Labonte has claimed career-highs in victories, (4) Top five finishes (19)and Top 10 finishes (23) in 31 races this season and is currently second in the Winston Cup standings. He had a breakout season last year as well, posting personal bests in Top five finishes and earnings. Labonte's first career victory came in 1995 in the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte. He has won at least one race every year since.

He was the NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division champion in 1991, and then was edged for the '92 championship by three points in a race to the finish with eventual champ Joe Nemechek. He finished second to Jeff Gordon in 1993 NASCAR Winston Cup rookie of the year standings. He began racing quarter-midgets in Texas in 1969, the graduated to go-karts in 1978. His NASCAR background includes Late Model Stocks, where he won a championship at Caraway Speedway in 1987, Late Model Sportsman and in 1990, his NASCAR Busch Series Grand National debut came.
