John Daly's chat
August 4, 2000

John Daly took fans questions, live, on PGATOUR.com, and he talked about his game and how he handles the ups and downs of being a professional golfer, as well as his victories in the 1991 PGA Championship and 1995 British Open.

Daly delighted the golf world with his surprising victory at the PGA Championship, where he was the ninth and final alternate at Crooked Stick Golf Club. He shot an opening 69 without benefit of a practice round, then added rounds of 67-69-71 for a three-stroke win.

Daly added a second major title when he won the British Open at St. Andrews in a four-hole playoff. He became the youngest active player on TOUR with two major championships and only the fifth American since World War II to win two majors before the age of 30.

Between majors, Daly captured the 1992 B.C. Open and 1994 BellSouth Classic. He also has one BUY.COM victory to his credit, as well as three international wins.

Daly, who has the longest driving average on TOUR (299.9), holds the distinction of having hit the second longest drive to date -- a whopping 364 yards. He was named Rookie of the Year in 1991. He was a two-time member of the Dunhill Cup in 1993 and 1998. See what John had to say in the full transcript below.

John Daly: Thank you for logging in. I appreciate all the fans who are sincere and keep pulling for me. Hopefully, I can change the negatives by working hard at my game and doing the best that I can do. Let's have some questions.

Question: John, what has been your best moment in golf?

John Daly: Probably winning the British Open. The PGA (Championship) was the best before that, but winning at St. Andrews was a lifetime dream.

Question: When did you begin golfing? When did you know you could/wanted to become a pro?

John Daly: I started when I was four, and right around my sophomore year in high school, I gave up baseball and focused on golf and football. Then, around my senior year, I gave up football and devoted everything to golf.

Question: Were there any particular golfers you looked up to when you were growing up? Like a role model?

John Daly: I always looked up to Palmer, Nicklaus, Lee Trevino and Fuzzy Zoeller.

Question: John, do you think Tiger Woods is a step above everyone else right now with the way he's playing?

John Daly: There is no doubt, but it's great because it elevates everyone else's game.

Question: Which tournament do you plan on playing next?

John Daly: The PGA Championship is next, then the Reno, Bell Canadian Open, the new tournament in Pittsburgh and then the Buick Southern Open. There's a few.

Question: I understand you drive a motorhome to most events. Are you afraid of flying?

John Daly: I do not have the motorhome anymore. I hate to fly, but love to drive to most of my tournaments.

Question: How do you overcome knowing that you are hitting the ball well but just aren't scoring? How hard is it to keep the confidence up, realizing it will come eventually?

John Daly: I've been going through that for over three years. It's very difficult to keep your confidence up; that is what I am fighting right now. I've never worked so hard at my golf game as I have the last two years, and it's just never come around.

Question: John, what club do you feel the most comfortable with on the course?

John Daly: The only one that has worked THAT DAY! :-) Usually it is my driver, and when it is working, I hit the fairways, and it gives me a lot of confidence and I play better.

Question: Where did you get all of your distance from? Did you ever lift weights or anything?

John Daly: I get my distance from the long backswing; it generates a lot of club-head speed. That, and my hips and legs.

Question: What would you say to a young golfer who gets discouraged?

John Daly: Don't do what I've done. The only thing you can do is hang in there and hopefully tomorrow is better. I was late to mature and I am still very immature, but you have to keep fighting. Another thing I tend to do, when I am not playing well, is I work on other shots. My scores may go up, but it is a chance to work on shots in TOUR conditions. If I am out of it, it's good practice, and hopefully I'll be able to pull those shots off when I am playing well.

Question: John, I just want to tell you that despite all the supposed media pressure that Tiger receives, with all the attention that you receive and for you to still hang in, you are setting an excellent example for others. With all the real-life problems that we all can relate to, you are truly a real-life role model. Sorry. Now on to my question, will you listen to fans like me and stick it out? Or, is retirement on your mind? Don't give up John; you da man!

John Daly: No, I love the competition and love the game too much to give it up.

Question: How do you determine which tournaments to play in? Does it have more to do with location or time? Hopefully, you will play in Milwaukee again.

John Daly: Basically, it is a few things. If I like the course, if I can drive to it, and if I am playing well, I want to keep playing. If I am not playing well, I might want to take a week off, go home and practice.

Question: How hard is the constant travel on your personal life?

John Daly: It gets tough. Being divorced two times, and not being able to see my kids as much as I like, I work around their schedule more than I do mine. Living in a suitcase is not as glamorous as people may think.

Question: If you weren't golfing, what would you be doing?

John Daly: That's a good one...maybe teaching? Or maybe building courses. Or maybe, work for a good, golf company.

Question: Who do you think had the most influence on your career, both on and off the course?

John Daly: I think growing up, wanting to play and win, I looked up to Jack Nicklaus. The closest guy on the TOUR with me is Fuzzy Zoeller. He's been my best friend on the TOUR, although he doesn't play as much now and is getting ready for the SENIOR TOUR.

Question: What's your favorite thing to do off of the golf course?

John Daly: Spend time with my kids, my family and try to play the guitar.

Question: Congratulations on the successful launch of John Daly Enterprises. Do you design any of the clothing yourself?

John Daly: A friend of mine who caddies for me now drew the logo. Cross Creek, the golf shirt, are the ones carrying my line. If you are interested in that, call 1-800-959-1507 and ask for Sue Shinalt. For the hats and T-shirts, go to www.johndaly.cc, not .com! And soon, SportsLine will be carrying them at GripItandRipIt.com!

Question: Do you teach golf to your kids? And, should we teach it to ours? Why?

John Daly: I let my girls do what they want. They want to go out and hit balls sometimes, but I never pressure them. I don't think you should make a child do something they don't want to do. Help them if they want to do something, but I would never push my girls.

John Daly: I want to thank everybody for coming online. It is a wonderful feeling to have all the support that I have through fans when things aren't going well. Hopefully, the fans that still care about me and want to see me do well, when my game comes around, we can say we proved them wrong. Thanks and goodnight.
