My win at the BC OPEN was a real confidence booster. I don't care what anybody says, the first tournament is not the hardest one to win;it's always the second one.
My rounds of 67-66-67-66 may be the most consistent golf I have ever played. Everyone always discusses the long ball when it comes to my game, but my short game is what won this tournament for me. The first round I only hit 2 of the first eleven greens, but got around with only one bogey.
I felt I could get up and down from anywhere. With my short game clicking, I knew the birdies would come and concentrated on putting myself into position to make them.
After I seized the lead at the halfway point, I got a call Saturday morning from my friend and agent, John Mascatello, who was in Pennsylvania getting married. He asked me if I was nervous, and I said, "Not half as much as you are right now." I told him hopefully he would get his wedding present a day late, on Sunday afternoon.
My last three rounds may have been the best golf I have played back-to-back. To play the last 54 holes bogey-free and 14 under-par was a great accomplishment. After securing a comfortable lead, the pressure was off a little, and I really got to enjoy the legion of fans at En-Joie Country Club. It was a great feeling strolling up 18 with the fans cheering. I truly had chills up and down my body.
To win again answered a lot of questions that I had along with my fans and critics. The victory at En-Joie was great for my confidence, and is one I frequently go through in my mind to reestablish that sense of confidence.
