Crooked Stick

My first and most treasured on tour was the PGA Championship at Crooked Stick. To go from ninth alternate to PGA champion is definitely a Cinderella story. When I got the call informing me that I moved up to first alternate, I packed up my car and headed to Indianapolis. When people ask me about the best drive I ever had, I always refer to the drive from Memphis to indianapolis. It was the biggest and best drive of my career.

My opening round of 69 got me off to a great start, but it was after my second round of 67 that I took a step back and said, "Wait a minute! I'm not even supposed to be here, and I have the lead going into the weekend!"

Daly's Winning Putt
All the cheering and tremendous fan support I received actually helped me maintain my composure, and find a way to come up with the victory. When I came to the eighteenth green on Saturday and received that stirring standing ovation, I made a promise to myself to try and win it for the fans. After the victory is when I realized that the fans had won it for me. All the excitement and encouragement I received kept me pumped up, and helped me close out the final round.

As I reflect back, I remember that great feeling of victory and the fans who helped me through it all. The eighteenth green on Sunday, August 11, 1991 is a moment in my life that remains very special to me, as I hope it does with you.
