The Mid-South Chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation® is one of 83 Chapters nationwide that comprise the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of America- the nation's largest wish granting agency. In October, 1996, Make-A-Wish Foundation® of America celebrated it's 16th anniversary. A new wish came true every 80 minutes last year, or a wish granted to another special chld a record 6,500 times.

The children served by Make-A-Wish are referred to us by physicians, social workers, the parent(s) or legal guardian and occasionally the referral is made directly by the child. We do not solicit wishes! Upon receipt of the parental request, the child's physician of record is contacted to evaluate the child's condition to determine if the child's illness meets the eligibility criteria.

After pre-screening of medical criteria, only then is the child contacted to discuss what special wish is desired!! This keeps a child from being disappointed. It is our goal to discover what the true wish of child really is...apart from the influence of others.

Many times siblings feel left out as the child who is ill demands the most care and attention, so when possible, the entire immediate family is included in the wish. Particularly if the wish is a travel wish. The wish provides a time of reuniting the family and allowing them to spend time together away from the hospital and treatments to create happy memories together. It is a carefree time due to all expenses being underwritten and all arrangements preplanned by the Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Mid-South.

Each of the 83 chapters is responsible for conductiong its agency's operations in accordance with the National policies. This includes quarterly reports of wish activity and rinancial reporting. Each chapter is also responsible for raising the necessary funding for its operational and wish granting service to children within its geographical area.

Wishes have been granted as unique as the kids themselves. Wish requests range from a puppy...to a Sega Genesis...to a shopping spree...to a visit to meet Hulk Hogan...to meeting Hootie and the Blowfish..to a computer..to a newly decorated bedroom..to meeting the President of the United States or to even meeting the Pope or whatever that special child's wish may be. The average cost of granting a wish is $3,000.00.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation® of the Mid-South is a non-profit corporation supported financially through the generous donations of individuals and corporations throughout our area that wish to sponsor all or a portion of a wish; by gifts in memory or in honor of someone; or by civic or other groups that host a benefit for us. Funds are also raised by hosting Special Events such as our Annual John Daly *Make-A-Wish Golf Classic hosted by John himself and the much talked about Bachelor Auction, which starred Fabio in 1996. The Stories of Light campaign each fall is the largest fund raiser for our chapter and generated enough money during the month of November in 1995 to grant 55 wishes!
