Pitched and played short at Aberdeen (MD) High (graduated 1978). Was 7-2
with an 0.70 ERA as a senior with 100 strikeouts in 60 innings. He also won
Harford County bat title (.492) and had 29 RBI in 20 games. Pitched a two-hitter
and fanned 17 to win 1978 Maryland Class A Baseball championship game.

Was voted American Amateur Baseball Congress (AABC) Graduate of the Year
in 1986, an honor won previously by Eddie Murray (1984) and many other prominent
major leaguers. Also earned two letters in soccer. Was team captain and both
an All-County and All-Metro selection. Played Little League, Babe Ruth and
Mickey Mantle League baseball. Led Putty Hill, MD team to Mickey Mantle World
Series in Sherman, TX (lost in a best-of-3 competition).
