About the Award

The Louis M. Hatter Most Valuable Oriole Award, is presented annually by the Sports Boosters of Maryland, Inc. This award has been given annually since 1954. The Sports Boosters initiated the MVO trophy in ’54, when the O’s returned to Baltimore. Several years ago, they remaned the award in memory of the late Hatter, the distinguished and lovable "dean" of Baltimore baseball writers who spent 27 years writing Orioles baseball for the SUN.

The award-winner is selected in a vote of writers and broadcasters who cover the Orioles on a regular basis. Point values are 5-3-1. Winners by position: Outfielders-14; first basemen-12; pitchers-8; 3rd basemen-4; shortstops-3; catcher-2 and 2nd baseman-once. There was no MVO award in 1994.
