The Baltimore Reads Ripken Learning Center
At the
Baltimore Reads Ripken Learning Center, adult learners take on the work of
learning life-challenging skills. Course work includes reading, writing, math,
and computer training, and life skills workshops in work ethics, job search and interview techniques.
As a laboratory for innovative adult education, the Baltimore Reads Ripken Learning Center shares its curriculum with other Baltimore City providers. It is also a resource for area businesses looking for reliable, trained, entry-level employees.
The Baltimore Reads Ripken Learning Center opened as a full service literacy center on July 16, 1990. It is named in honor of Baltimore Orioles superstar and local hero Cal Ripken, Jr. and his wife, Kelly. The Ripken Learning Center is operated by Baltimore Reads, Inc., a nonprofit, United Way agency.
The program requires a commitment of 30 hours per week, for three to six months. This time is divided between the classroom and "on the job" internship assignments. Baltimore Reads Ripken Learning Center program can serve at least 300 adults each year, including evening and weekends in adult basic education (ABE) instruction from September through May, and GED preparation year round.
In the day program, the staff of professional instructors and counselors work with adults who can read at the third to twelfth grade level. The learners are grouped accordingly reading level. Computer instruction reinforces reading, writing and math skills. Word processing training is also provided to all learners. The goal of the day program is to prepare learners for successful careers.
650 adults took advantage of Baltimore Reads Ripken Learning Center resources in 1996-97 and in 1997, 32% of all learners who left the program obtained full-time employment.
Instructors and counselors act as facilitators of learning, and aim to create life-long learners who will take personal responsibility for their own education and success in life.
