The Kelly and Cal Ripken, Jr. Foundation:
Cal actively supports the community in a variety of ways, including the
establishment of The Kelly and Cal Ripken, Jr.
Foundation, which primarily supports community adult and family
literacy, youth recreational, and health-related programs in the greater Baltimore area.
The Baltimore Reads Ripken Learning Center:
Since inception, Cal and Kelly have contributed or helped raised $1.2 million for the Baltimore Reads Ripken Learning Center. This includes the November 1991 Winterfest for Literacy and the annual Reading, Runs, Ripken program. In addition, the Foundation has donated $250,000 to other literacy programs throughout the country. This was done in conjunction with Cal's 1997 The Only Way I Know book tour in which the importance of the need for coummunity literacy programs was emphasized.
The Kelly G. Ripken Program:
The Kelly G. Ripken Program is a resource for thyroid education and patient care at Johns Hopkins.
Baltimore School for the Arts:
Kelly and the Foundation continue to host and support the school's annual
presentation of the Nutcracker ballet.
Because We Care:
Cal, through the foundation, continues to donate tickets to every Orioles
home game, a program he and Eddie Murray initiated in the mid-1980's.
Sam Hulett Fund:
In 1992, Cal and Kelly made a donation of $50,000 to the Johns Hopkins Children's
Center toward the establishment of The Sam Hulett Fund in memory of the son
of Orioles' infielder Tim Hulett.
Cal has participated in Pam Shriver's Tennis Challenge in 1990, 1993,
and 1995. The Challenge benefits the Baltimore Community Foundation.
