A hitter with home run potential, he has belted 34 HR in two minor league pro seasons (26 at Eugene - 8 at Reading)
Hit his first major league home run last Fall after his recall from Eugene; it came off Montreal's Balor Moore on 9/16 at Vet, a three-run shot that won a ballgame for the Phillies
A fine college player, he helped lead Ohio University to Mid-American Conference championships in 1969-70-71 and to NCAA District Four title and fourth place in College World Series in 1970 (his junior year)
In 1971, he hit .331 in 37 games with 10 HR and 35 RBI
Was named to All-Conference, All-District and The Sporting News' All-Star teams and NCAA College All American second team
Set school and conference records in home runs and school marks in runs and RBI
A manager at Eugene, Andy Seminick, says of Schmidt, "I feel he has to be a real fine player. He's aggressive and will hit with power. I think third base is his best position."
Played winter ball for the Caguas Criollas where he was named MVP in the League's All-Star game getting two hits and three RBI
