Had tremendous sophomore season raising his batting average 86 points and leading major leagues in HR (36); last Phillie to lead majors in HR was Gavvy Cravath (24) in 1915; last to lead NL was Chuck Klein (28) in 1933

Also topped NL in slugging percentage (.546) and SO (138)

Finished second to Bench in RBI (129-116) and total bases (315-310) and second to Rose in runs scored (110-108)

Started season with opening day, game-winning HR off Tug McGraw

Hit 2 HR in a game six times

Had 9 HR and 24 RBI vs Pitts. And 7 HR and 13 RBI vs Cin

Hit ball off centerfield speaker in Astrodome on 6/10 off Claude Osteen, 300 feet from home plate and 117 feet high for baseball's "longest ground rule single"

Belted five HR off Bucs' Jerry Reuss and three off Reds' Don Gullett and Cardinals' Alan Foster

Hit four HR in both Three Rivers and Riverfront Stadiums

Finished second to Ron Cey in voting for NL third baseman as he amassed an all-time, write-in vote

Set NL record for third baseman, most assists in a season (404)

Finished second in Gold Glove voting to Astro's Doug Rader

Had 26 errors, but just five after the All-Star break; 11 miscues came on throws

Has good speed for a big man

Was toughest player in NL to double with 4 DPs in 568 ABs

Stole 23 bases in 35 attempts

Led Phillies in runs, total bases, HR, RBI, walks, SO, and games played (162 -Bowa and Cash also played all 162). . .Second to Montanez in Game winning hits (12)

Had tremendous June: .394, 10 HR, 32 RBI, NL Player of the Week (6/3 - 6/9)

Slumped in Sept. - Oct.,. .223, 4 HR, 18 RBI

Hit .276 at Vet and .288 on the road

Received numerous post-season honors

Named third baseman on UPI NL All-Star Team; AP Major League All-Star Squad, and THE SPORTING NEWS NL All-Star Team; also named AABC (American Amateur Baseball Congress) "Graduate of the Year" and awarded the Babe Ruth Crown presented by The Maryland Professional Baseball Players Association

Runner-up to Dodgers' Jim Wynn for NL Comeback Player of the Year

Received Mel Ott Award symbolic of NL home run king at Philly Sportwriters Banquet, Jan. 27

Spent winter making personal appearances and accepting awards

Did local weekly radio show with Dave Cash
