Mike Schmidt answers fan e-mail questionsStephen from East Greenbush, New YorkQ1: Mike, with your power in the 70's and 80's, what do you feel you would have accomplished in the 90's with the deteriation of pitching? Schmidt: It's not so much the pitching as it is the smaller ballparks and shrunken strikezone. Mike Schmidt in today's game? Same numbers as today's leaders - 45-55 home runs and 120 to 140 RBI. Tom from Forty-fort, Pa.
Q2: Mike, what is your opinion of the Phillies' Scott Rolen? Schmidt: Scott Rolen has a great future, maybe not in Philly though, unless they commit to a new stadium and a winning team. For that you need to spend money. Rolen will be an All-Star for many years. David from Miami, Florida Q3: Mike, are you interested in coaching/managing someday in the major leagues. Schmidt: Right now I'm concentrating on professional golf. I have one year before Senior Tour Q-school. If I don't reach my golfing goals in a couple of years, maybe I'll try to get back into baseball. Paul from Philadelphia, Pa. Q4: Mike, what is your opinion of the designated hitter rule? Schmidt: The designated hitter has had it's place over the years. It has allowed many careers to be prolonged. I am a purest though, and I don't think the game's rules should ever be changed. Jeff from Annapolis, Maryland Q5: Mike, given the recent accomplishments of Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire, as well as Ripken's games-played streak, what is the single most amazing accomplishment in Major League history? Schmidt: Ripken's games played streak will NEVER be broken and probably is the most amazing accomplishment. Look for future Q&A sessions with Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt in the upcoming. months. In the meantime, please continue to e-mail Mike with your questions and comments. |
