From One Parent to AnotherParenting is the most important building block in our society. A parent's responsibilities can not be relinquished to any institution or individual. The most important thing in your life is not your job, house, car, husband or wife. The most important thing is your child. How you prioritize and build your relationship with your child is entirely up to you. There is no prior training from which to obtain a certificate. There is only the tried and true method of the school of hard knocks. Much of the knowledge of any society is passed on to the next generation through the actions and deeds of parents. That's why it is critical that parents not pass on garbage and prejudices but rather values, customs and traditions. We owe at least that much to our children because they didn't have input in the selection of us as parents. They suddenly discover that this large blob of protoplasm standing over them acting so sanctimonious, self-righteous and superior is their parent. With this discovery comes a choice. Do I love them or do I tolerate them? The choice is theirs not yours. What can you do as a parent to affect this relationship? There are two critical elements that go into this equation: trust and respect. These must be earned. And it is here that you as a parent can devote much of your energies. When this has been achieved on a mutual basis, the relationship can perform miracles. It works.
