TWF announces 1999 Scholarship Winners
WILLIAM & MARCELLA POWELL SCHOLARSHIP TWF is pleased to announce the recipients of the 1999 William and Marcella Powell Scholarship award, Brent McPherson and Faith Brocklehurst. In their short lives, these high school students have both already overcome significant challenges while achieving excellence in the classroom. Brent McPherson is a member of the National Honor Society, International Circle and Hunger Task Force. He has won awards for excellence in science, literature, and has represented the state of Ohio at the International Science and Engineering fair for the past two years. He accomplished this after having suffered severe multiple trauma from a motor vehicle accident in 1994 which resulted in five surgeries to repair the physical damage. Brent will attend Ohio State University in the Fall. Faith Brocklehurst has been active in the National Honor Society, two varsity sports, and maintained an 'A' average while working 35 hours per week at a local golf course. Her goal in life is to attain financial independence. "I want to be a successful person one day without having to rely on anyone but myself," Faith said. For her, winning this award provides encouragement and much-needed financial assistance for her college tuition (solely her responsibility) at Ohio State University. The William & Macella Powell Scholarship Award was established in honor and recognition of the courage, determination and pioneering spirit of William and Marcella Powell. The $1,000 annual scholarship is given to two Minerva High School graduating seniors who achieved academic excellence in spite of facing significant challenges. ALFRED "TUP" HOLMES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP TWF salutes the winner of this year's Alfred "Tup" Holmes Memorial Scholarship, Jamaal Brown. Jamaal graduated from Benjamin E. Mays High School in Atlanta, Georgia this Spring. In the Fall, he plans on attending Howard University in Washington, D.C. where he will study both business and law. The Alfred "Tup" Holmes Memorial Scholarship Award was established by TWF to honor the civil rights pioneer who paved the way to desegregating Atlanta's public golf courses in the 1950's. "Tup" Holmes spearheaded the effort after being asked, along with his brother and father, to leave a public golf course in Atlanta because they were black. His efforts led to the Supreme Court decision to desegregate Atlanta's public golf courses. This scholarship commemorates his courage; his tenacity; his victory. The $2,500.00 scholarship award is given yearly to one Atlanta Metropolitan area graduating African-American high school senior who has displayed high moral character while demonstrating leadership potential and academic excellence. Information on TWF scholarships is available by contacting Michelle Bemis at (714) 816-1806. Congratulations to all three scholarship winners!
