'Closers for Keeps' May 1, 1998

John M. Haddow is the commissioner of the Capitol Baseball League -- in existence for 15 years. The league is an auction-type and has had congressmen in it. There is currently a team from the White House, but I think the President has been too busy to get involved.

The closer position is one that takes a lot of thought, and if you are in a league that keeps players from year to year, then you have to look ahead. This year I had Tom Gordon coming back in a "topper-rights" situation. (The owner has frozen him for a year at the previous salary and can now retain him by adding $1 to the top bid at the auction). The fact that the Red Sox had brought in Dennis Eckersley

was both troubling and beneficial to me. The Eck went earlier than Gordon in teh draft and the bids went to $17. I had been reading the Boston papers (you have to love the internet) and they all said that Gordon was the man. But here was Rich Garces getting five saves in spring training. I ended up keeping Gordon for the price of $22. This was a bargain as it turns out.

I then purchased Paul Spoljaric for $5. This is because the Mariners bullpen is always up in the air and he could become the closer later in the year and then next year. A $5 closer is always a steal. I added Alan Mills for $1. He has some potential to get a few saves and if anything happens to Armando Benitez, then he would be the man.

Last year I got Randy Myers for $37 and he was worth every penny. If my hitting had only produced at the same level, I would have finished in the money. I passed on "freezing" him at that price because he went to the Blue Jays and I did not see as many save opportunities for him. You always have to remember that without a win you cannot get a save.

In summary, Gordon is my main man this year, but I am looking at the potential of Spoljaric and Mills for next year. I just picked up Bill Simas (White Sox) for the $5 pick-up price and he could be in the same category as Spoljaric. Matt Karchner had better finish the games.
