Bleacher Features - 'The Sanford and Son Syndrome'
Tom Hoffer's favorite players are Bonds, Walker etc., as well as 'the guys who play the game hard all the time.' There are no five-tool guys on his 4th place roto team, however!

This is our eighth year in existence, and over the years we have adapted our rules to handle different situations as they occur. When something happens that we feel dictates a rule change, we come up with a solution, and put it in place for the following season. The rules are too numerous and detailed to list here, but there are a couple that come into play regarding the 'Sanford & Son Syndrome' topic.
Our draft order each year is the reverse order of the previous years finish (i.e. finish last this year, draft first next year). It worked pretty well until last year, when the person in the penultimate position (next-to-last) decided to have a fire sale in an effort to finish last, and thus land the first pick in this years' draft. Most of the deals made looked reasonable for the most part on paper, but some were shaky, and if nothing else, the motives of the deals were questioned by some. We all knew what was happening, but did not have a rule in place to stop it, other than a trade review process that wasn't used because no one asked for it. The team ended up finishing in a last place tie, and lost a coin flip to pick first.
The following rule came out of the situation and will be used from now on:
The top three teams from the previous year will be locked in at 10, 9 and 8 in the draft order for next year, and everyone else goes into a lottery draw like the NBA uses. So, if you don't finish in the top three, you could be picking #1. Now, finishing last doesn't mean anything except you get a lottery spot.
