Bleacher Features - 'Cellar Dwellers'
CBS SportsLine Fantasy Baseball
'Movin' On Up' June 3, 1998
Andrew Lericos is currently in second place in his CBS SportsLine ROTO Challenge league. His favorite player is Paul O'Neill of the first place Yankees.
Here are some of the things I do to stay ahead in my league (OK, I'm in second place, but that ain't bad.)
Note: All salaries are based on CBS SportsLine's ROTO Challenge Game for the current period.
- Power is cheaper then speed. i.e. Vinny Castilla $1466 Tom Goodwin $1600.
- Keep an eye out for superstars at great prices. i.e. Mike Piazza for $875. He will produce once he gets settled.
- Field lots of Yankees. Ok that's an opinion but they can put the numbers up and the team is on fire.
- Pitching, pitching, pitching. Ask any real manager and he'll tell you pitching wins games.
- When a player goes threw the roof in price, trade him for more, less expensive, talent. i.e. Alex Rodriguez costs $2434; Nomar Garciaparra is at $1310 -- that saves $1000 bucks to use at other positions.
- Go for package players. A Player who hits for average and power and some speed if they got it.
- Take advantage of real cheap players who produce. Ben Grieve is at $570 and produces lots of runs and RBI and has some pop in his bat.
- Take control pitcher over power pitchers. Greg Maddux will put up good stats even if he is off. When Curt Schilling is off, he gets rocked.
- Don't drop a good player if he has a bad week. Most will bounce back. Everybody has a bad week occasionally.
- Play your favorite players. It's a game after all so have fun.
