Bleacher Features - Early Surprises
CBS SportsLine Fantasy Baseball
'Clark Barred' May 12, 1998
Along with a friend, Tenn Lions co-manages a team in the CBS SportsLine Head-to-Head Challenge Game (league 034) and a team in the Roto Challenge Game, as well (league 076). His team in the H-T-H Challenge is in second place (18-12).
As the baseball season shakes off the memories of spring training, we begin to see who's for real and who is not.

Mr. Lions is most disappointed in Mr. Clark! (Allsport)
|
The usual players are putting up great numbers. Griffey, McGwire and Ivan Rodriguez among others are performing as expected. There are however, a few suprises.
The negative suprises would have to include Pedro Martinez, Justin
Thompson, Randy Johnson, and Frank Thomas. While these players are playing at a respectable level, they're not playing up to their full potential. Taking his seat at the top of the disappointment heap would have to be Tony Clark.
REBUTTAL
Doug Smith of Columbia, SC disagrees with Tenn Lions:
Pedro Martinez on the negative list? I've got Pedro in my league, and
I'm very happy with his results thus far. Of course, we count
strikeouts in our league, which has something to do with it. But even if you
take that factor out, I don't think Pedro can be considered a
disappointment at all. I would, however, add Travis Fryman and Brady
Anderson to the disappointment list. These two guys have done
absolutely nothing thus far this season.

The first thing that jumps out at you is his low home run number. Nobody
expected him to have TWO homers at the beginning of May. His run production has been nonexistent. His batting average hovers around .230 and the most telltale sign of his struggle is that players around him are performing well. Damion Easley and Luis Gonzalez are having great years up to this point.
Odds are, he'll pick it up before the season is over. A player who has
picked it up right from the start is Kevin Millwood. On a pitching staff full of Cy Young Award winners, he's the top dog. He's at the top in the NL in wins, ERA and strikeouts. Considering he was expected to be a decent fifth starter, he'd have to be the biggest positive suprise yet.
