Bleacher Features - Early Surprises
Joe Monaco, is a veteran Fantasy player in Boston. He participates in baseball, football and hoop leagues. Joe is currently the proud owner of Mark McGwire.
My submission for the biggest early-season suprise would have to be Derek Bell of the Houston Astros. Bell has done it all thus far, hitting for average and power, driving in runs, and stealing bases.
Bell started his career with Toronto and then San Diego, before becoming a regular in the Houston lineup. Bell has certainly shown flashes in the past, with career highs of .334-21-113 with 29 SB's. However, Bell acheived each of these highs in different years. This year, he seems to be putting it all together. In a lineup surrounded by the likes of Craig Biggio, Jeff Bagwell, and the newly acquired Moises Alou, its easy to see why Mr. Bell is seeing his fair share of pitches to hit. For those lucky owners who have him (myself not included, unfortunately,) lets hope this hot start continues. Honorable mention for surpising hot starts includes Jeromy Burnitz, anchoring the Milwaukee offense, and Jason Kendell of the Pirates, not posting monster numbers, but at catcher, is proving to be a valuable commodity.
