'Blame It On the Rain' May 15, 1998

Pat Patruno plays in a Roto league with his friends and friends of friends. He's a diehard Mets fan who is fed up with the words 'rained out'!

Ordinarily, your competitive nature or the fact that you have plunked down a few buckaroos, compels you to wait until the All-Star Break before you waive the white flag.
Do you agree or disagree with Mr. Patruno?

Carlos Baerga and the Mets have taken the worst of the bad weather in the north east. (Allsport)

This year, you are almost left with no choice but to wait until then. Let me explain:

For one thing, many 'superstar' caliber players (Frank Thomas for e.g.) almost always get off to poor starts, and this year is no exception.

Secondly, many starters are either languishing on the DL, or are sporting nagging injuries (the entire NY Mets team, Nomar Garciaparra, Chan Ho Park, Ken Caminiti, Matt Williams, Hideo Nomo, etc. and the list goes on and on).

Thirdly, there have been many rainouts (yet another pointed finger at the dreaded El Nino) with games being rescheduled later in the year. All these factors can add up to a dreadful beginning for Roto leaguers, especially if your players are the ones that are hurt, start slow or have missed many games due to bad weather. However, you have to remember that these factors can also dramatically undervalue your players and an attempt to clean house (especially if you are in a keeper league) could end up costing you for seasons to come.

So my advice is to sit tight, scan the free agent lists for any sleepers and maybe you'll have a chance to turn it around before its too late.
