Even the longest of hitters will be hard-pressed to reach this
this
green in two. If Tiger Woods is playing well, there
will be quite a stir as he approaches the ninth tee to see how he decides
to play this hole.
John Daly reached Baltusrol's 630-yard 17th hole with a driver and 1-iron in 1993, but he did not have to contend with the ravine that cuts through this fairway just short of this green. Any attempt to reach the green in two must carry the ravine, a lot to ask from anyone, even Tiger. The tee shot is challenged by bunkers that guard both sides of the fairway, so it must be long and down the middle. The safe play is to lay up short of the ravine to set up the approach, which must be precise, as again bunkers come into play on both sides of the green. |
