| Lindenmuth Advance to Olympic Track Cycling Quarterfinals
Sept. 18, 2000
Tanya Lindenmuth reached the quarterfinals in the women's sprint
competition.
Lindenmuth was the eighth-fastest qualifier in the women's 200-meter time trial Monday morning before falling to Venezuela's Daniela Larreal in the first round.
The youngest-ever U.S. female Olympic cyclist, Lindenmuth, 21, came back with a victory in the repechage round and will face 1996 Olympic champion and five-time world titlist Felicia Ballanager of France in Tuesday's quarterfinals.
"My goal coming to Sydney was to finish in the top eight and I have accomplished that. I thought I did everything right in the first round, but I allowed the Venezuelan rider to beat me.
The day was marked by the tragic news of the death of U.S. road cyclist Nicole Reinhart, who was killed following a bicycle crash at the BMC Software Tour of Arlington (Mass.) race
Sunday.
A two-time elite national track cyclist, Reinhart had competed with nearly all members of the
U.S. Olympic track cycling team.
"We will miss Nicole and have dedicated our performances to Nicole and her family," said Lindenmuth, who trained at the Lehigh Valley (Pa.) Velodrome in Trexlertown. "It was a great shock that has affected everyone on the team and within the cycling community. She was a great friend and cyclist, and we look to perform our best to represent our love for Nicole."
In tribute to Reinhart and her family, the U.S. Olympic cyclists wore decals on their racing helmets of Reinhart with a pair of hearts.
