Megan Quann ended an Olympic gold-medal drought for the U.S. that had lasted nearly three decades by winning the 100m breaststroke. Catherine Carr last won this event for the U.S. in 1972.

Quann made good on her Olympic Trials prediction of Olympic gold by swimming a 1:07.05 over Australia's Leisel Jones (1:07.49) and defending champion and world record-holder Penny Heyns of South Africa (1:07.55). Heyns went out fast with a 31.10 opening split, leading Quann by .55 seconds, but the high school junior brought it home a full second faster then the veteran champion.

Quann's broke her American record for the fifth time since December of 1998. Tonight's swim was the sixth-fastest performance in history.
