All but one running event at the Olympic Games are done on a track. The marathon is held on the streets of the Host City.
The other running events include sprints and long distance races. The sprint races are run over distances of 100m, 200m and 400m.
Sprinters need to be very strong. The distance events are much longer. Distance runners are usually thinner than sprinters.
Distance runners need to have good endurance. The long distance races include the 800m, the 1500m, the 5000m, the 10,000 metres and the marathon.
The athletes run in marked lanes on an oval track. There are also events where athletes jump over hurdles as they run.
The remaining running events are the relays where teams of 4 compete over all of the sprint distances.
