Scavotto, 18, started off the match with a 10 on her way to a 26-24 lead after the first of six three-arrow ends in the 18-arrow match. But Kawauchi was remarkably consistent in her shooting the rest of the way, nailing four 10's while Scavotto could manage only one 10 over her final 15 arrows.

Scavotto didn't comment on the match, but her coach Butch Johnson (Woodstock, Conn.) noted the pressure of the match.

"Under pressure like that, you tend to not finish the shot," said Johnson. "Karen was doing a lot of that."

Scavotto, competing in her first Olympic Games, will shoot in the women's team round on Thursday.
