Michael Jordan's Personal Trainer
My name is Tim S. Grover, and I'm the CEO of A.T.T.A.C.K. ATHLETICS, INC.®,
based in Chicago. Since 1989, I have been training Michael Jordan as his
Sports Enhancement Specialist. Training the world's greatest athlete has
been far more than challenging. The dedication and energy Michael puts
into his workout regimen would surprise even the hardest working individuals.
Michael's training regimen is virtually year-round. As each stage of the
season and off-season approaches, we anticipate the new demands that
will be placed upon Michael's physical and mental well being. To keep pace
with his changing needs, his workout is continually adjusted to meet his
short and long-term goals.
Michael Jordan’s preparation for the 1997-98 NBA season is right on schedule. The work started 6 weeks before training camp opened. Starting time is key, because we do not want Michael to peak too early or show signs of fatigue during the season. We started with low intensity/high-"reps" work with weights, stabilization and conditioning. Every two weeks the intensity was increased until training camp opened. This way, his body would be strong enough to endure the rigors of practice. A major change in the program was made when it was discovered that Scottie Pippen would be out of action for two to three months. This meant that Michael’s role on the team and the demands on his body would increase, and physically, he would be pushed to the maximum. Additional emphasis was therefore placed on the muscles in the feet, ankle, knees, and hips to try to prevent and minimize injuries and to delay fatigue in the lower extremities. Different exercises were added to strengthen the shoulder area so he will be able to maintain the correct arc on his shot if and when his playing time increases. Footwork drills - to help him to avoid and go around double teams - was also implemented in the regimen. If all goes well, Michael and the Chicago Bulls should be in a perfect position to win #6...
