Preventing heartburn

Heartburn has nothing to do with the heart, of course. The most common cause is gastroesophageal reflux; the backup of the stomach's content into the esophagus, where gastric acids produce a burning sensation.

To avoid heartburn, do not over eat, avoid fatty foods, which slow the emptying of the stomach and do not eat right before lying down. Do not sleep flat. Place wooden blocks under the head of your bed to elevate it by at least six inches.

Avoid tight fitting clothes and constipation, both of which can increase abdominal pressure. If you are taking medication, ask your doctor or pharmacist if it may be causing the heartburn. Cut down on alcohol and caffeine, and do not smoke.
