Elite Eight: GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The rookie coach just keeps rolling along.
Top-ranked North Carolina advanced to the Final Four for the 14th time, the fifth time in the '90s, the second year in a row and the first time under coach Bill Guthridge with a 75-64 victory over Connecticut in the East Regional final on Saturday.
The 60-year-old Guthridge may be 10 Final Four appearances behind Dean Smith, his boss for the previous 30 seasons, but this trip ties North Carolina
with UCLA for the most in the history of college basketball.
Sweet 16: GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Richard Hamilton's rebound jumper in the lane at the buzzer, Connecticut's third shot in the final eight seconds, gave the second-seeded Huskies a 75-74 victory over Washington in the East Regional semifinals.
Connecticut (32-4) will play top-seeded and top-ranked North Carolina,
which beat fourth-seeded Michigan State 73-58, in Saturday's regional final with a
berth in the Final Four at stake.
No. 11 seed Washington (20-10) took its
first lead at 74-73 with 33 seconds left on
a 3-pointer by Donald Watts.
Second round: WASHINGTON -- If this year's Indiana Hoosiers had as much staying power as their coach, they might still be alive in the NCAA tournament.
Instead, Connecticut will be taking another trip to the final 16 after
rallying to beat the Hoosiers 78-68 Sunday, much to the displeasure of Indiana
coach Bob Knight.
Richard Hamilton scored 23 points and Khalid El-Amin had 22 points and eight
assists for the second-seeded Huskies, who trailed by eight points in the first
half and by five at halftime before coming back to win.
First round: WASHINGTON -- Fairleigh Dickinson decided to take a gamble and get into a running match with Connecticut.
It made for great entertainment, even if UConn ran the Knights right out of
the NCAA tournament -- despite a 43-point performance by Elijah Allen.
Richard Hamilton and Khalid El-Amin each scored 30 points as second-seeded
Connecticut held off the fearless 15th-seeded Knights and advanced to the
second round with a 93-85 victory Thursday night.
