Second round: CHICAGO -- Opening tip. Game over. Once again, it was Purdue early -- and decisively.
For the second consecutive game, Purdue took a large lead and was never
caught. The Boilermakers, the second seed in the Midwest, defeated Detroit
80-65 Sunday and advanced past the second round of the NCAA Tournament for only
the third time in coach Gene Keady's 18 seasons.
First round: CHICAGO -- The Detroit Titans are back, baby!
Derrick Hayes scored 27 points as Detroit defeated St. John's 66-64 Friday night in the opening round of the Midwest Regional. It was the Titans' first
NCAA tournament victory since 1977 -- when Dick Vitale was their coach, not the
nation's college basketball mouthpiece.
Tenth-seeded Detroit will play in Sunday's second round against
second-seeded Purdue (27-7), which defeated Delaware 95-56.
