National semifinal: SAN ANTONIO -- No gimmicks this time for Utah, just another win over a No. 1 seed.
One week after the Utes shocked the defending national champions in a
25-point laugher, they held on for a 65-59 victory over top-ranked North
Carolina on Saturday, advancing to the Final Four championship game for the
second time in school history. Utah won the title in 1944.
Against North Carolina, the nation's leading shooting team at 52
percent, the Utes went straight man-to-man and lived up to their title as the
No. 2 field goal defensive team in the country. The Tar Heels shot just 39
percent (27-for-69), including 3-for-23 from 3-point range.
Elite Eight: GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The rookie coach just keeps rolling along.
Top-ranked North Carolina advanced to the Final Four for the 14th time, the fifth time in the '90s, the second year in a row and the first time under coach Bill Guthridge with a 75-64 victory over Connecticut in the East Regional final on Saturday.
The 60-year-old Guthridge may be 10 Final Four appearances behind Dean Smith, his boss for the previous 30 seasons, but this trip ties North Carolina
with UCLA for the most in the history of college basketball.
Sweet 16: GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The top-ranked Tar Heels used their superior speed and skill to toss aside and Antawn Jamison had 20 points and 14 rebounds in a 73-58 victory in the East Regional semifinals on Thursday night.
"I'm one of those guys that love the big games. I love if you lose --
everything is gone," Jamison said. "This is when I really have fun and my
teammates do the same thing.
"We play a lot of teams really gunning after us. When the stakes get high
that's when I really relax a lot more."
The top-seeded Tar Heels (33-3) moved within one victory of the
single-season school record for wins and a fifth Final Four trip this decade,
beating the slower Spartans almost every step of the way.
Second round: HARTFORD, Conn. -- This is why North Carolina avoided its neighbor from Charlotte all these years.
The top-ranked and top-seeded Tar Heels needed overtime Saturday to
defeat North Carolina-Charlotte 93-83 in the schools' first meeting and
advance into the East Regional semifinals.
North Carolina (32-3) outscored UNCC 19-9 in overtime after the 49ers tied
the score 74-74 in regulation on Diego Guevara's leaning 3-pointer with 2.9
seconds left.
First round: HARTFORD, Conn. -- All-America Antawn Jamison had 17 points and
14 rebounds to lead top-ranked North Carolina to an 88-52 victory over
Navy on Thursday in the opening round of the East Regional, the Tar Heels'
first NCAA tournament victory without Dean Smith on the bench since
1957.
The top-seeded Tar Heels (31-3) dominated the 16th-seeded Midshipmen
(19-11) in every facet of the game, holding them to 27 percent shooting
from the field and outrebounding them 57-33.
