Sweet 16: ST. LOUIS -- Even with a 7-footer who was a non-factor, Stanford had more than enough size to topple Purdue.
When Tim Young drew his third foul and sat down with 6:41 left in the first
half, it actually was the takeoff point for the No. 3 seed Cardinal. Stanford
finished the first half on a 17-2 run and held on for a 67-59 victory over the
second-seeded Boilermakers in the Midwest Regional semifinals Friday night.
Second round: CHICAGO -- Opening tip. Game over. Once again, it was Purdue early -- and decisively.
For the second consecutive game, Purdue took a large lead and was never
caught. The Boilermakers, the second seed in the Midwest, defeated Detroit
80-65 Sunday and advanced past the second round of the NCAA Tournament for only
the third time in coach Gene Keady's 18 seasons.
First round: CHICAGO -- Brian Cardinal scored 16 points to pace five players in double figures as two seed Purdue scored the game's first 18 points and demolished No. 15 seed Deleware 95-56 in a Midwest Region first-round game at the United Center.
Mike Robinson scored 15 points and Brad Miller added 12 for Purdue (27-7), which claimed the school's biggest NCAA Tournament victory. The Boilermakers had 27-point victories on two prior occasions. They defeated Memphis, 100-73, in the second round in 1988 and topped North Carolina, 92-65, in the 1969 National Semifinals.
Did you know: In 14 NCAA
Tournament appearances under Keady, the Boilers have reached
the regional final only once (1994).
