What in your life are you most grateful for?
For my wife and family more than anything else. I have three sons in their 30s and a daughter who is 30 and grandchildren. The older you get the more you appreciate things. I had a wonderful wife and family during my baseball years, which helped me professionally. I've been married for 38 years.
If your car hit a parked car and you're sure no one was watching, what would you do?
I would leave a note. I have done that before. The more I think about it ... it depends on how much damage.
If you could be someone else for a day, who would it be?
I just want to be me.
What do you like best about your life? Least?
The best thing is that I am picking and choosing the things I want to do now. The least is the travel but I have cut back on that. I am enjoying myself. I work for two or three companies but it is not like I have to go somewhere every day. I am starting to relax.
If your life were a feature film, would it be a comedy, drama or action?
It would be a comedy.
If you're talking to someone who has something between their teeth, do you tell them?
Only if it is my wife.
Is there something about yourself that you would like to change?
I am too impulsive about things. I want to be less impulsive and sit and think about things instead of "yeah" or "nah."
What characteristic do you despise in other people? What do you admire?
I despise people who are greedy. I admire people who are sensitive to other people. People who can make anyone feel at home and feel good about themselves.
It's your last meal, where and what do you eat?
I'd eat barbeque spare ribs or Mexican food.
If you had to be someone of the opposite sex who would it be?
I'd like to be Diane Sawyer and be able to ask the right questions at the right time.
Who do you admire? Why?
If you're talking about baseball I'd have to say Stan Musial. He has been my hero since I was a youngster and to play against him and meet him, to go to Vietnam with him and go to the Hall of Fame inductions -- I just always admired him.
What is your favorite place in the world?
Carmel, Calif.
You have to fly across country, who would you like to sit next to?
I'd like to sit next to someone who didn't utter a word.
If I were to push "play" on your CD player, what would be playing?
The Eagles.
If you could make $10 million next season and not win a title or make $30,000 and win a title, which would you chose?
I think that definitely you go for the title the first time around. The second time I might take the $10 million. The title is what you play for. In 1966, when we won, I remember sitting there and I said 'If we never win again, that is what it is all about, winning the title.' When you first come into the league and you are playing in the minor leagues, all you think about is what it would be like to win the pennant and then the World Series. That is all I thought about was getting better and better and winning. And when you win that is the epitome. Because even now I look back on all those players on that team in 1966 and you get a big smile thinking of the wonderful things that happened that year.
What is a perfect day?
A perfect day is just like Baltimore today, blue skies, a cool breeze blowing and my windows open, and the breeze is blowing through the windows. This is what I call a Carmel, California day. It is a Carmel day.
