Scott Covington

By Allyson Turner

Scott Covington threw for 2,301 yards and 19 TDs with 8 interceptions last season as a senior. In the Hurricanes' surprising upset victory over UCLA, Covington completed 19 of 28 passes for 318 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Despite starting only one season at Miami, Covington believes his abilities will offset his lack of playing time when NFL teams consider drafting a quarterback.

If you had your choice, would you prefer to be thrown into the fire and take over the starting position or gradually learn a system?
I think if I were to be thrown into the fire, I would have to feel comfortable with the offense in the system that I'm having to run. If those are answered, I think being thrown into the fire is something that I can very much handle.

Did you always want to play in the NFL?
I always wanted to play sports. As each year went by, football began to be the sport for me.

What is your best attribute?
Very patient, very calm and very confident.

What is your worst attribute?
The one thing negative that I haven't been able to overcome is playing time.

What are you doing leading up to the draft?
I've just tried to maintain working out and just keeping myself in top shape and in the best condition that I possibly can.

Does it matter to you where you are drafted?
Not really. I'm not picky because I know I don't have control over that. Knowing that, no I don't have a problem going anywhere.

In an ideal world, where would you most like to play?
Unfortunately, they don't have a team but Los Angeles. In a sense, it is about as hometown as it gets. I'm a 49ers fan but it would be nice to be able to play in Southern California considering that's where all my family and friends are.

What are you personal goals for football?
To establish myself in whatever organization that drafts me. To continue to grow and build myself to be one of the elite NFL quarterbacks.

If you could learn from one veteran quarterback, who would it be?
Troy Aikman. He's someone that I've really watched for five years and partly, in fact, that I had a head coach (Butch Davis) that coached with the Dallas Cowboys. He's someone who I've had a lot of access to in terms of watching a lot of game film.

Realistically, who do you see yourself playing like?
The two quarterbacks whose style I enjoy to watch is Brett Farve and Troy Aikman.

If you could be invisible in any huddle, which quarterback's huddle would you choose and in what situation?
Joe Montana's huddle. Probably the Super Bowl drive versus the Bengals.

Which receiver would you most like to throw to?
Jerry Rice.

What about a running back?
I've been a long-time fan of Marcus Allen.

What is the first thought that comes to mind for each of the following sport figures?

  • UM RB Edgerrin James: Talent.
  • UM coach Butch Davis: Leader.
  • Former UM QB Vinnie Testeverde: Patience.
  • Former UM WR Yatil Green: Sky's the limit.

Who had the most influence on you?
My parents, of course, and not even having anything to do or related to football. It's just the type of people they are and ways in which they've raised me and brought me up.

What was the best piece of advice you received and who was it from?
Taking the high road in things. It means a lot of things -- not burning bridges and keeping your mouth shut sometimes. That advice came from my father.

    What is your pet peeve?
    Laziness.

If you could invite anyone over your house for dinner, whom would you invite?
    Elvis Presley.

    What is a perfect day?
Probably back home with my friends hanging out at the beach.

What do you want for your life after football?
Whatever this means, I want some form of security. I'd like to be able to do what I want. I definitely want to have a family and spend as much time with them as possible.
